Finally saw Star Trek today!

Chris Pine was PERFECT as Kirk. Absolutely PERFECT. He was Kirk, without being... well, Shatner. I wasn't expecting much from him, but he worked wonderfully.

Bones? PERFECT. EEEEE. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Spock? Eh... sometimes I saw flashes of Sylar, especially at the very beginning. After a certain point - when everyone was aboard the Enterprise, I think - I stopped noticing. He did a good job as Spock. I really enjoyed the Young Spock and Old Spock part at the end! Oh, Old Spock. Never stop being awesome.

Chekov? Scotty? Sulu? YES.

Uhura... well, hm. I did like that she was very good at her job, and that she didn't get placed in an "Action Girl" slot. The problem is, as the only main female character there are certain... I'm not sure how to put it. Expectations? (Would it have killed them to have Nurse Chapel or Yeoman Rand somewhere?) And besides that, I just didn't think she felt much like Uhura. I'm having a difficult time defining exactly what Uhura's personality was in the Original Star Trek, but her character just didn't seem as spot-on as the rest. Maybe it was the romance? Spock/Uhura is, eh... I didn't really hate it, but I didn't really love it either. I've always liked Spock better when he has holds his emotions very tightly in check? Spock was a little too emotional in this movie for my tastes, even though it's understandable emotion. Alternate universes, I guess.

The plot is, eh... yeah, a Star Trek plot. But without any message, which I didn't really mind, but it didn't feel much like Star Trek without a heavy-handed message about peace/tolerance/whatever.

I mean, "red matter"? Hahaha, couldn't they at least have tried to come up with a better name than that? And Nero, couldn't you try to, I don't know, SAVE ROMULAN IN THE 25 YEARS YOU'VE BEEN HERE INSTEAD OF PUNISHING SPOCK FOR SOMETHING THAT HASN'T HAPPENED YET?

The plot didn't really matter to me much, though. It was the events that made me giddy. Kobayashi Maru? EEE. Spock beating up Kirk? EEE. Sulu fencing? EEE. Chekov doing... well, anything? EEE. Little Spock? EEE.

So pretty much the entire movie was one big nerdy "EEEE" moment from me.

Well, except the whole parents dying thing. That depressed the heck out of me. And whenever I tried to actually think about the time travel aspect (argh, I hate time travel stories).

"Boldly go where no one has gone before"? Hahaha.

The audience in the theater I was in was pretty good. They laughed at all the right places, and cheered at the end. Unfortunately, I had an obnoxious fan sitting next to me who WOULDN'T SHUT UP. This can only mean I have to go see the movie again, right? Right.

So, overall? GOOD: Characters (casting and personality), excitement. BAD: Plot, science, promotion logic. I really liked it! I didn't love it more than the old TV series. But I didn't hate it like I was worried I would.

"Boldly go where no one has gone before"? <- yeah why would you change that and still have all the girls in tiny skirts. Boggled my mind.

See the movie again, you'll notice more things and it'll be JUST AS GOOD.

The science didn't bother me, except for the occasional twitch, but it's Star Trek, so you have to kind of look the other way with these sorts of things.

And I loved Spock/Uhura, I think it was more of a plot point to show the difference between this Spock and Spock from the original series (I thought Zachary Quinto was AMAZING) and she didn't end up with Kirk. I thought she was totally Uhura, she got the basics of it and just became much more useful in a smart way.

Well, I've heard arguments that the miniskirts were to keep the feel of the old series, which I can understand, I suppose. I just hope in the next one that they don't feel like they need to try so hard.

I've heard there's a hidden tribble somewhere in the movie! I didn't catch it my first time through, but next time I'll be keeping an eye out for it.

I had really high expectations for Spock and Uhura, so I think that might have been the reason I was a little upset by them! I wasn't expecting much from Kirk, so I was giddy when Chris Pine did a good job. I had really high expectations from everyone saying what a great job Zachary Quinto did, so maybe I was a little bit more picky about him. He got the voice and mannerisms right, definitely. The emotions, eh... it will take a bit of time for me to get used to this new Spock.

I loved that Uhura didn't end up with Kirk! I don't even mind that she ended up with Spock (much). Maybe when I see the movie again, the shock won't hit me as hard this time and I'll like it more. I always thought they'd be kind of cute together in the original series (Charlie X!) but the movie caught me off guard. Haha, silly me, expecting a female character to remain single in an action film.

I think I predicted they were doing it by the way they were acting together so I liked it so much.

I did NOT see the hidden tribble, apparently Majel Roddenberry is in there somewhere too (it was her last film before she passed on), but I didn't catch that either.

I think because I was expecting an entirely new take on Star Trek the differences didn't bother me.

Yeah the outfits are ridiculous and wouldn't have bothered me as much if they weren't all wearing them. Keeping that with the old series is in the 60s when this is NOT the 60s. It made no sense to change a bunch of other things and not have at least some of the EXTRAS in pants. I wouldn't have even cared if it had been split up. Or maybe a dude in the skirt, hey it's the future! Be progressive, dammit.
