blue_barrette: (HOW IS THAT EVEN A THING?)
Really, I think I'm just ranting as an excuse to use this icon (♥ Karkat)

Finished Dragon Age 2 tonight. Lots and lots of end game spoilers! )

So, in the end, something like 5/10? A really slow start, some odd corners cut, and a fairly unconnected plot really do drag it down.
blue_barrette: (ahoge!)
So earlier I mentioned that I'd gotten the Beatles stereo set for Christmas.

I really like the Beatles. There are other bands I like more, but if I'd lived in the right decade I would have been screaming along with the rest of those insane fangirls. I went through a phase in middle school where I absolutely loved them, and recently Beatles Rock Band rekindled my interest. Despite all this, when I got the Beatles box set I realized how freaking many songs they wrote that I had never even heard of before.

I like to talk too much. )

So, uh, if you're thinking of picking up any Beatles CDs - I'd recommend Help! if you like pop, Rubber Soul if you like pop and don't mind the mildly disturbing lyrics, and Abbey Road if you like good music.

Avoid Yellow Submarine (too many instrumentals and repeats - "Hey Bulldog" is a great song, but not worth it) and With The Beatles (just not that great).

Photobucket dropped their account size limit from 1GB to 500MB. Now where am I going to store all my animated gifs of Mr. T punching a shark?

Actually, going through my account to try to delete the 33MB I need to be able to upload new stuff is really difficult. What will I do without all these hilarious things? I mean, sometimes I'll just open up this and smile for a few seconds before closing it out of boredom.

I guess I could cull some of my collection of Star Trek gifs, but... most of them make me laugh too.

I suppose while I'm still thinking about Star Trek I might as well finish up my Season 1 various thoughts.

Various thoughts about episodes 21-29 (yet another excuse to post gifs) )

Oh, and by the way, in case you were wondering about the phaser vs. tricorder thing? I ended up ordering a phaser and a communicator, but the communicator arrived broken, so the company I ordered from sent a replacement communicator along with another phaser. So now I have two phasers and a communicator! Let me tell you, dual wielding phasers is actually pretty awesome.
blue_barrette: (rule #62)
So, I was shopping (never a good thing) and I've been trying to decide - should I go for the medical tricorder or phaser? It's difficult to choose. I think if I were ever going to make a Star Trek costume (psssssh, yeah right) I'd be really torn between gold and blue.

Hmmmm.

Various thoughts about episodes 11-20 (still mostly an excuse to post gifs) )

So I've been watching the entire Star Trek: The Original Series run, with the occasional episode of some other series in between, at which I shake my head and lament that although Q is, in fact, hilariously awesome, he is not quite enough to make me love the other series as much as the original.

Once again, if you're in the U.S. you can watch all the episodes for free.

I did get to see the new Star Trek movie again, and I've pretty much figured out why certain things bothered me about the movie and have accepted that they are just alternate universe and I should just relax! Movie!Spock != Original!Spock, and while there's no good reason why that should be so, I will accept that and move on.

Various thoughts about episodes 1 - 10 (mostly an excuse to post gifs) )

Feeling poetic? Put your mp3 player (or iPod) on shuffle and write down the first line of the first 21 songs that play to form a "poem". No skipping songs! (unless they happen to not have lyrics) Don't cheat! It can say a lot about you based on the music you like!

Out in the shiny night, the rain
The iceman came to me tonight,
You need someone to hold you
You don't know me but I'm your brother
Just in time I found you just in time
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Bicycle bicycle bicycle
Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya
Hearts are worn in these dark ages
Standing in the dock at Southampton,
My life goes on in endless song
Pickin' up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream
Storybook endings, fairy tales coming true
Ain't but one way out baby, Lord I just can't go out the door
Take you to the cinema
Drunk on wine, I'm amazing
I'll play for you
Somewhere there's a someone for everyone
Every time I look at you the world just melts away
When you called me up this morning,
Let's get down to business

...that turned out ridiculous.

Finally saw Star Trek today!

Thoughts (spoilers) )

So, overall? GOOD: Characters (casting and personality), excitement. BAD: Plot, science, promotion logic. I really liked it! I didn't love it more than the old TV series. But I didn't hate it like I was worried I would.
blue_barrette: (ha ha ha hmph)
I really want to see the new Star Trek movie!

Of course, I'll probably hate it ("but that change means such-and-such episode couldn't have happened, and that was one of my favorites!") but I still really want to see it! I really, really, really love the original Star Trek series - it's so cheesy, and so full of terrible science, and bad acting, and idiotic plots and so on, but that's what makes it so good! I've always kind of liked Star Trek. While other science fiction universes imagined the future as a dark, depressing place, Star Trek was very... optimistic, I suppose.

Everyone should go and watch the series. Well, not all of them, I guess. "Spock's Brain" is a... really weird episode. But at the very least everyone should see "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Mirror, Mirror." Those two are pretty much a part of American culture now.

This is really funny if you've seen a lot of the old episodes, especially the flow chart at the bottom.

Truthfully, I've never really watched much of any of the other series. Whenever I try to watch The Next Generation, I always get annoyed by Wesley, though I like the rest of the cast a decent amount. I haven't even watched all of the original series! When I used to watch the episodes on TV, they always played the exact same episodes every time. I've seen "Amok Time" too many times to count.

I got my Coraline shoes... uh, a couple of weeks ago now. Um.

They're pretty cute! I like the gratuitous stitching, and the big buttons are nice. They're even the right size! Which was shocking, actually, because the Coraline website asked you to put your shoe size in men's size, and I had little/no idea what my shoe size is in men's.

But I'll never wear them, largely because the soles are glow-in-the-dark and I don't want to ruin that.

Re: Firefly

Episodes 2-5 remain pretty awesome! I'm starting to feel a little depressed, though, since that means I'm already more than a third through the series. I-I really can't see why they would have canceled this show? It's really enjoyable, much better than anything I've watched on TV lately.

If any of you guys want to watch it (and you're in the US, I guess), the whole series is up on Hulu.
blue_barrette: (wh-what?)
Re: Firefly

I... wow. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, since everyone recommends it, but the first episode was incredibly good. I think I'll be marathoning the series over the next few days!

If I ever write a vampire story:

1) It will contain absolutely no romance between an ancient, 100+ year old vampire and a teenage girl (because I have not found one story where I don't find that creepy. And no, making her the reincarnation of his previous love does not make it any less creepy. Nor does "freezing" the vampire. It's creepy).

2) The vampires will be weak to friggin' everything. Garlic. Stakes. Holy water. Sunlight. Scattered rice. Running water. EVERYTHING. If humans can't crush vampires when they show their pasty undead heads, I begin to wonder why vampires haven't just enslaved the human race yet.

3) They'll be very powerful physically, though. Maybe have some sort of hypnotism power, I'm not sure yet. They'll be totally weak if you're prepared. But if not... odds are good the vampire's getting dinner tonight.

4) They will not be able to turn into bats, wolves, or mist.

5) There will be no secret vampire overlord council. I just don't like that particular plot device. I like the idea of lone wolf vampires.

6) Vampires won't be able to cheat and drink animal blood. I'm fine with them being able to go without blood for long periods of time, though.

7) There will be no whining about souls.

8) Or children.

9) Or "equal rights."

9) They will not have any weird powers I decided to give them on a whim because I didn't do much research about vampires.

10) If at all possible, there will be a reference to Chinese hopping vampires ♥

The first five people to comment in this post get to request a sketch of a character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their drawing ability level. If you absolutely can't draw, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drabbles or icons or something instead.

1. Don't choose something I don't know about.
2. Don't get your hopes up. I rarely finish this sort of thing.
3. Sketches will be cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] brazen_art.

I'm a little bit bored today. All my big projects are done. I only have a few essays and one final left. Boring!
blue_barrette: (i'll be waiting)
I want to try doing a daily sketch again.

Since I don't want to spam anyone's friends-lists, though, I've created a community for it - [livejournal.com profile] brazen_art. In all likelihood I'll end up abandoning it a week from now. Still, it's always possible I might stick with it.

I'm actually seriously considering deleting all the stuff from my deviantArt account. There are too many creepy people on dA. Plus I've had the account since 2002! While I haven't really improved as much as I'd like in the last 6 years, my old stuff is still mildly embarrassing. I find it difficult to delete things, though? I wish there was some sort of "Make Private" option. That way I could keep all the idiotic comments, but without having to worry about getting more.

EDIT: It's snowing AGAIN. I don't like driving in the snow. I skipped class last week, but I don't think I can do that again. ARGH. ARGH ARGH ARGH. Why can't the snow come at a convenient time for once?
blue_barrette: (read)
I finished Breaking Dawn tonight.

Thank goodness that's over.

So, okay, I didn't really mind the first three books. They aren't the best books in the world, but I found them pretty fun. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. I'd be afraid of them liking the books in a non-ironic way. But they made me laugh. I like the melodrama, and occasionally (usually when the werewolves are around) they're genuinely funny. Unfortunately, Bella's a horrible person, Edward's an abusive boyfriend, and everyone else in the books, including the two-dimensional villains, are more likable then them. But despite that, even Edward and Bella manage to be bearable characters.

And then along comes Renesmee. I hate children that are supposed to be oh-so-adorable and everyone loves them and is willing to give up everything to protect them. GAG. I barely got through the third part of Breaking Dawn because of that.

Retrospective. )

By the end of the book, I still was occasionally hearing this (at 1:12) when anyone yelled Bella's name. Actually, watching that is more fun than I had reading Breaking Dawn. That Bella is certainly more likable than the Twilight one!

...Bella!
blue_barrette: (oh come on)

I voted today.

In all honesty, the only thing I'm really happy about was being able to vote against Amendment 48. Most everything else was just annoying.
blue_barrette: (perhaps)

...one of these days I need to find out where I put my tablet.
blue_barrette: (green smile)
I now have four Tear One Coin figures. D-does anyone want one?

On the plus side, I also got Anise and Luke this time, so I'm done collecting them now! (unless I find a long-haired Luke for a decent price)

If they come out with a Vesperia One Coin set, I'm just ordering a set of them from somewhere. None of this blind-box stuff.
blue_barrette: (happy princess!)
So I finally ran out of stuff to do in Tales of Vesperia )
